4 Ways how SEO Can Ruin your Content
24 Mar 2015

“It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it. If you think about that, you'll do things differently.” (Warren Buffett)

We have been asked once or twice by our clients whether SEO can actually damage the rating of a specific website. Our initial response to that specific question was a complete denial but the more we thought about it, the more we came to realize the fact that yes, under certain exceptional circumstances SEO can actually damage content and harm the rating of the website.

1. Inexperienced SEO content-writing

One of these circumstances is when the content has been written by a completely inexperienced SEO copywriter. Mostlykey phrase driven content faces this problem. The main reason behind this is the fact that content writers are requested to come up with a 500 word article which is written around the keywords and includes the keywords at least ten times. The article is generally at par with the client’s requirements but the content would not be understandable by regular site visitors.

2. Search Engine Driven Content

When an article or a blog post is written only to drive search engine bots towards the site that’s when the main problem arises. There are many companies out there which write their FAQ portion just to drive up search engines towards them while neglecting their main priority; the customers. When companies try to write articles centered onkey phrasesthey lose their coherence. The end result is an article stuffed with grammatical errors that are illegible. We are pretty sure you’ve seen many such websites around but you probably ignore those articles. Why? Because they lack substance.

3. Smart SEO

So at the end of the day, it’s not actually SEO that ruins content. Smart SEO actually makes the content easier to be targeted by search engines and enables people to share it via social media and attract organic traffic. Smart SEO is all about creating articles which are written to target both search engines and people and if you balance both the scales with perfection, you have indeed acquired a skillset which is invaluable.

4. Stupid SEO

On the other hand, stupid SEO, written by inexperienced SEO (Search Engine Optimization) authors written just to attract Search engines would end up damaging your website. Repeating a keyword incessantly will only put a negative impact on the conversion rate.

We believe in the fact that SEO is all about attracting clients to your website but if utilizing SEO leads to a lower conversion rate and clients navigating away from your website because they think that the content is not worth wasting time, then there is no point in having an optimized website.

“Bottom line is, I didn't return to Apple to make a fortune. I've been very lucky in my life and already have one. When I was 25, my net worth was $100 million or so. I decided then that I wasn't going to let it ruin my life. There's no way you could ever spend it all, and I don't view wealth as something that validates my intelligence.” (Steve Jobs)
