FREE APPS VS PREMIUM APPS

Mobile notifications put people in a state of perpetual emergency interruption – similar to what 911 operators and air traffic controllers experienced back in the 70’s and 80’s.

Douglas Rushkoff

Technology of this world has gone beyond the interpretations of any scholar and has now attained an ultra height. I believe so because within seconds we can find the history of the bygone people nearly 2000 years ago. And not only this, we can transfer images and other media from continent to continent and ocean to ocean.

Now I surmise you might negotiate without contradictions that this an ultra age due to the advancement of technology.

Smartphone is the greatest technology of all times after the invention of electricity. A whole computer exponentially condensed into a mini phone having a space-aged technology. This technology incorporated in the smart phones in the silhouette of applications.

The reason I don’t carry a mobile phone is I don’t want people to know where I am.

MOBILE APPLICATIONS

It is a computer program designed to run on smart phones, tablets and other device of similar assembly. The term ‘app’ is the shortening of ‘application software’. These applications are available on an application distribution platform such as Blackberry, Android play store and iTunes.

Basically there are two types of applications:

·       Paid apps or premium app

·       Free apps

PAID APPS

The paid apps as indicated by their name charge their users. 20-30% of the revenue of total charge goes to the distributor provider i.e. iTunes whereas the remaining goes to the owner of the software.

The paid apps can bring in the revenue directly if your paid app fulfills the expectation of the consumer who showed faith in your app by investing in your brand for the accomplishment of their requirements.

FREE APPS

Free apps available on the application distribution software do not charge their users and after the free download of the app, the user can have access of the app freely and endlessly.

John Manoogian, co founder and CTO at 140 proof, made an interesting observation that clearly orates that the advertising apps bring in more revenue than the paid ones in the long run.

A survey by Cambridge University depicted that 73% of the apps on the android platform were free. And of those, 80% received their revenue via advertisements.

PREFERENCE

Among the generation, the wide spread out burst of free apps is more conspicuous than that of paid ones because of its free accessibility to users.

Only 20% of paid apps are downloaded more than 100 times, of these, only 0.2% paid apps are downloaded over 10,000 times. Whereas on the flipside, 20% of free apps get 10,000 or even more downloads.

On a broad prospect, it is easy and convenient to convince a developer to invest more in advertisements rather than persuading hundreds of users to buy an app. Because without proper marketing and advertisement strategies it is next to impossible to aware the kid next door about your brand.

Hence a better route for earning revenue would be the development of free yet beguiling and enthralling app.

On engagement, we're already seeing that mobile users are more likely to be daily active users than desktop users. They're more likely to use Facebook six or seven days of the week.
