Short films, videos: Going viral!

The short film has taken some interesting turns on its route from the Lumières to YouTube’s viewing millions, says Rebecca Davies.

Our newfangled and voguish world is pacing towards advancement with the speed of light. This advancement has shown its metaphoric touch in every aspect of human life, ranging from technology to practical life, from sports to culture, from entertainment to education hence wrapping all the facets of human life.

Movies, serials, short films, games, etc all are included in the facet of entertainment of human life. In all races of humans, entertainment has been the subject of improvement and discussion since the domain of Roman Empire (117 CE).

Short films have recently gained popularity from a graph of sea level to a height of infinity. A short film is a film usually not long enough, 40 minutes approximately, including all the credits and is also known as ‘short’ (plural: shorts).

Keeping things short and simple as inspired by my own blog Keep it Simple, Keep it short! will definitely be a source of captivating attraction. A forte which is applied since decades and has worldwidely accepted and favored by thinkers and writers of all times.

Americans don't spend billions for entertainment. They spend it in search of entertainment.

Production and Creation

Short films are created sometimes with a low or no budget whereas sometimes with a high budget. It is never funded by sponsors though.

Short films do qualify for Academy Awards if screened in Los Angeles (LA). Shorts are usually screened in festivals whether local or international. Sometimes the purpose of filmmakers of short films is to attract the targeted sponsor for future funding.

History

The first seen movies were merely ‘clips’ in the former centuries. The arrival of 20th century brought the revolution in the film industry by lengthening the clips from minutes to hours.

And the very first films were presented via kinetoscope of Thomas Edison in 1894 to the public.

“Film as dream, film as music. No art passes our conscience in the way film does, and goes directly to our feelings, deep down into the dark rooms of our souls.”
― Ingmar Bergman

Love for shorts

Despite the cinemas being fulled due to a grand movie of a prevalent Oscar winner celebrity, millions of likes on YouTube do count the importance of short films in today’s generation.

*   Low budget:

Not everyone has inherited millions from their parents or grandparents. Shorts are more preferable due to low or no budget limitations. It doesn’t require whole crew or production cast. It’s just you and your ideas with a couple of your mate actors.

*   Easy Wing:

In the hectic and busy world of today, many do not have hours to spend over entertainment. Hence, few minutes of shorts proves to be a ‘moment of repose’ for them.

*   Dream resemblance:

Once wandering might have pushed you to think about the dreams that you have encountered since your childhood. The dreams that are the most likeable and those that are quite horrid, some may make sense, some may not, lasts only few minutes but marks an everlasting image in the kink of our brain.

Shorts are just like dreams, making sense or not but touching our hearts and lasting a mark of permanence in our lives.

That’s what public like. The unexpected, like our dreams. The intimate, catchy and capturing.

A dreamer is one who can only find his way by moonlight and his punishment is that he sees the dawn before the rest of the world. (Oscar Wilde)
