Updating Your Own Content: Things I’d like to Say to Clients
16 Mar 2015

“Every year in consulting is like three years in the corporate world because you have multiple clients, multiple issues - you grow so much.” (Indra Nooyi)

Many times we get inquired by our clients whether it is really needed to update their content. The true, honest, straight-forward answer to that is yes. That is when the clients come up with questions as to why it is necessary. In the following article we will be telling you about the benefits of updating your content.

SEARCH ENGINE RATINGS

The first main reason behind updating your content and post should be to improve your search engine ratings. In case you didn’t know, fresh content attracts search engines faster and better. Search engines are coded in such a way that they look for active websites. If you happen to update your website, it’s like shouting out to the search engines to come and check you out.

BAD LINKS

The other practical reason behind updating your content is the fact that it keeps your website –up-to-date. If you are overlooking your website there is a high possibility that you’re neglecting the links that your website has. Bad backlinks translate into bad search engine rankings.

WHAT REGULAR VISITORS DEMAND?

Finally, regular visitors to your website demand and crave for fresh content. If you are presenting them with stuff that is not in the moment then they would slowly turn away. Website updating is all about building the interest of the public.

THINGS THAT YOU SHOULDN’T DO

However there are a certain things that we personally feel you should not play around with. They are better kept without being updated since usually whenever someone bothers updating them they mess it up.

Area above the fold

The first heads up is about the area above the fold; that area requires a lot of skill to be crafted and it is designed to appeal to both humans and search bots. If you do end up making changes to it, there is a high probability that you won’t be completely satisfied with the results. If you want to make changes, let us handle the area above the fold.

Font

Secondly, font changing, just don’t do. We understand that many of us get the temptation to change font color, alignment and perhaps even the font family. However, visitors generally don’t care about the font unless it is too painfully colorful. As long as the color palette is simple, visitors will be happy. Most of the times, clients end up making the wrong changes to the font family.

However, at the end of the day, it is your website and you just pay us to design it. But as a general note, we would like to warn clients about it, but we are pretty sure that would sound offensive rather than caring.

“To be successful in real estate, you must always and consistently put your clients' best interests first. When you do, your personal needs will be realized beyond your greatest expectations.” (Anthony Hitt)
