Typography: An important aspect of web designing

“Design can be art. Design can be aesthetics. Design is so simple that is why it is so complicated.” (Paul Ran)

Undoubtedly, Typography and the font families that anyone chooses have a great impact on many aspects of the website. Typography in general can define the mood, readability and perceived article length to the reader. In order to create a visually stunning design, it is essential that the authors are well acquainted with the vision and mood of the website they are designing.

Limit Font Faces

One of the principles that holds immense importance when using typefaces is to use a fair amount of consistency with your design. There are two extreme set points when using typeface, one is to use the same font throughout your website and the other one is to use a different font family in every sentence.

Perfection is when you strike a balance which lies in between the two ends of the spectrum. The best option is to take 2-4 typefaces and stick with them in your website design.

When the web design includes more than 4 typefaces, that’s when the content starts looking awry and readability of the text becomes an eyesore.

Font Selection; flavor of individuality in your website

The main reason behind implementing a font family is to give character and mood to the content that is being presented on your website. This means that before designing, one needs to observe the core values of the company or your blog with a keen eye. Once you know the idea that you want to convey to the end user, that’s when you decide a particular font family that you would like to stick to. If you really want to reflect individuality in your website then you can always design a new font family altogether.

Text Alignment; readability of your content

Alignment is quite significant for your website. The way an article affects the readability and clarity of your content. It also reflects the mood of your website.

Traditionally, four different types of alignments exist (right, left, centered and justified). However granted the power of CSS and Photoshop fueled images, you can pretty much align your text anywhere and in any manner your heart desires.

However it must be remembered that while aligning the content you do not neglect the main structural flow that exists. Obscurely aligned text would result in more loss than gain.

Color; mood reflection

While considering typography one must not forget the power color holds on an article. Color of the font family will reflect the mood of your website. However care must be taken and bright colors should be avoided.
