“Google can bring you back 100,000 answers. A librarian can bring you back the right one.” (Neil Gaiman)

In the past few weeks Bing has made it clearer and clearer how the search engine operates. They have exposed the strategy that they will implement in order to minimize spam. Also, the company has decided to change titles of webpages depending upon the preferences of their users.

Changes in Search Engine Results Pages

Bing declared that in order to provide efficient search results to user queries and provide minimal hassle to the searcher, Bing will implement the following changes in Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs).

-          The titles of webpages will be changed in order to make the title relevant to the user’s search query.

-          The URLs that are displayed may also be optimized if Bing feels the need to do so.

-          Snippets shall also be optimized.

In order to implement changes in the URLs, Titles and Snippets, Bing shall follow a laid down set of rules which aims at resolving user queries according to their preferences in as minimal time as possible.

How will the Webpage Titles be changed?

Long titles shall be truncated in order to minimize the space used. Similarly the search giant might also integrate some general pieces of information that they have learned from the user’s preferences. For example, if the user likes to know the company name and other relevant information about the company, then, the title shall be modified to include the company name in the search results.

Filtering Based on Quality

Apart from this Igor Randell, Principal Development Manager of Bing Index Quality recently disclosed how Bing aims at combatting spam and minimizing irrelevant search results.

According to him, the search engine has got its algorithms renewed and is now able to easily access and filter content based on its quality. Bing has now come up with a unique way to evaluate the quality of the content. The search engine has gotten sophisticated and instead of just utilizing keywords to make the judgment about content relevancy it actually assesses the entire site’s structure, content and ad positioning to declare the relevancy of content. This allows spam sites to be easily marked down since they include more ads and lack proper content. The algorithm of the search engine has now been integrated to include, minute things like content relevance, number of words etc.

Search Results based on Site Layout

Igor also said that Bing’s algorithm will now check the page for how many ads it has. It must be kept in mind that having ads on the page doesn’t mark them bad, however having a large number of intrusive ads will definitely harm the standing of the website.

Similarly the positioning and layout of the content is also given relevance. The search engine notices whether the actual content gets more real estate than the ads and also whether the ads are neatly placed in the header or footer to allow easy access to the content.

It is safe to say that Bing has definitely made some positive changes in their algorithm which will try to minimize if not completely eradicate spam websites.

“So I say to you, Ask and it will be given to you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you.”
